Wine
Gisborne is known as New Zealand’s Chardonnay Capital but many other varieties are available for your enjoyment. Walk Gisborne is pleased to be associated with three of the district’s leading wineries – The Millton Vineyard, Tietjen Witters (TW Wines), and Matawhero Wines .
The Millton Vineyard is world-renowned for its wine quality and winegrowing techniques. In 1984 James & Annie were the first in New Zealand to adopt a minimum intervention approach without the use of herbicide, insecticide, soluble fertiliser and systemic fungicide.
TW wines emanate from The Golden Slope where two good friends, Paul Tietjen and Geordie Witters each have a vineyard. Their wines epitomise what the world has come to expect of New Zealand wine - power, complexity, elegance and excellent cellaring potential.
Established in 1968 by Bill & Denis Irwin, Matawhero Wines defied convention and made wines of boutique standing and international acclaim. Today, revived by the Searle family, Matawhero is true to the founders’ determination, producing individualistic wines of world class standard. The old Matawhero Cellar Door at Riverpoint Road is reopened and faithfully portrays that idiomatic character the brand is so much loved for.
A selection of these wineries’ national and international award-winning wines is available for you to enjoy as you unwind after your day of walking and with your evening meal.
